The plot traces the relationship between recent college graduate Anastasia Steele and manipulative billionaire Christian Grey. Steele is required by Grey to sign a contract allowing him complete control over her life. As she gets to know him she learns that his sexual tastes involve bondage, domination and sadism, and that childhood abuse left him a deeply damaged individual. In order to be his partner she agrees to experiment with BDSM, but struggles to reconcile who she is (a virgin who has never previously had a boyfriend) with whom Christian wants her to be: his submissive, to-do-with-as-he-pleases partner in his “Red Room of Pleasure.”
The Fifty Shades Trilogy was developed from a Twilight fanfiction originally titled ‘Master of the Universe’ and published episodically on fanfiction websites under the penname “Snowqueen’s Icedragon”. The piece featured characters named after Stephenie Meyer’s characters in Twilight, Edward Cullen and Bella Swan. After comments concerning the sexual nature of the material, James removed the story from the fanfiction websites and published it on her own website, FiftyShades.com. Later she decided to rewrite Master of the Universe as an original piece with the principal characters renamed Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele and shortly prior to its publication withdrew the fanfiction version from her website.
I have not read this book. I am trying to be as objective as humanly possible. The above 2 paragraphs were taken directly from the wiki page for 50 Shades of Grey.
This book is ON FIRE in America. Almost literally. It is being banned, in places, people can’t get a copy fast enough. Why? It brings a taboo subject directly into your living room. What’s wrong with a little BDSM now and then? America has closed it’s eyes to the sexual revolution that happened 60 years ago, and never went away. They simply closed the door, and pretended to never see it. In 1954 there was a story published by a French author (Pauline Réage) called Histoire d’O or “Story of O”.
Published in French by Jean-Jacques Pauvert, Story of O is a tale of female submission about a beautiful Parisian fashion photographer, O, who is blindfolded, chained, whipped, branded, pierced, made to wear a mask, and taught to be constantly available for oral, vaginal, and anal intercourse. Despite her harsh treatment, O grants permission beforehand for everything that occurs, and her permission is consistently sought.
The concept is not new, but it is new to the “soccer moms” across America. Because this story is known to be based off of the Twilight characters, it has gotten vast recognition, in minimal time, since it’s release. It is a reworked fan-fiction piece that is most likely (for all intents and purposes) over rated. I have read Story of O, and it is INTENSE. If you enjoy 50 Shades of Grey, then I will simply ask you to go to a used book shop, or check online, and obtain a copy of Story of O. There is a remarkable difference in the way it was written, and the story it tells. While it is not the same story, you will be equally if not more intrigued by the story at hand. Bree Olson also starred in a XXX version of the book called “The Surrender of O” in 2008.
